EMERGENCY & DISASTER MANAGEMENT

If the massive and unparalleled catastrophic damage from Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Fiona has taught us any lessons at all, they reside in the unfortunate lack of preparedness from most companies and individuals in Puerto Rico which resulted in a scale of devastation to lives and personal property on island never seen before that has inexorably altered the futures of so many families and businesses on island for years and years to come, and in many (too many) cases, forever.

SCPR has been a leader for the past 10 years in PR in the implementation of emergency management planning. This includes both large and small scale projects for over 10 million square feet of commercial facilities including high rise Class A office buildings, warehouses, retail centers of all classifications, etc.

While it is impossible to control or forecast every element of natural or man-made disasters, it is imminently possible to ensure your facilities and personnel are fully aware of ALL emergency protocols and procedures.

This entails, to name a few, ensuring all power, data, operational utilities, and administrative, redundancies are in place and fully functional and accessible at all times, and that all relevant personnel are trained to deal with every possible facet of an impending or current disaster, and accessible to your facilities throughout the pre and post disaster event. It means ensuring your power generators, potable and non-potable water systems are in place and ready, food storage is in place and protected from any potential damage or exposure, medical supplies are on site, protected, and readily accessible, hazardous substances/chemicals are completely secured, satellite and mobile communications are 100% ready and accessible, HVAC systems are secured, security services, emergency fuel supplies are full and secured, etc.

Equally as important as the pre-disaster planning is the ability to IMMEDIATELY, literally within minutes of the event occurrence, have your strategic disaster recovery partner en route to your facilities to commence triage operations, structural facility stabilization, medical and emergency services distribution, establish communications with any and all available municipal, state, and federal agencies, etc.

The proudest and most important moments in the history of SCPR are, and will always be, our unparalleled response to Hurricane Maria on behalf of the approx. 5 million square feet under representation from CPG Real Estate, and the entire Pep Boys portfolio in Puerto Rico.

Within hours of the storm passing, SCPR personnel were on site at each CPG location in Bayamon, Carolina, and Catano, stabilizing the physical structures, checking for any injuries, and ensured each and every tenant was able to access their facilities and secure their operations and property. Within 5 days, every park – comprised of over 2.5 million square feet – was cleared and open for business.

Every single one of the 27 pep Boys locations on island was open within 72 hours of the Hurricane passing the island. Our personnel were on site at every single store within 48 hours commencing all necessary physical stabilization including roofs and structural walls, security, safety, etc as the needs arose.

The most important element of Pep Boys stores being open has nothing to do with sales figures or any seemingly insignificant corporate metrics at that time, or any aspect of regular business protocols, but everything to do with the stores being the ONLY place open for weeks in most communities for families and municipalities to secure the supplies and materials desperately needed to literally survive the initial post storm madness that ensued. That higher purpose and the understanding of that overarching dynamic is why we have been entrusted with over $500 Million in real estate assets in PR.
